an excellent look into paris life, culture, and politics, written from the perspective of an american (and canadian) living in the city over the course of 5 years. adam gopnik, taking the assignment of "paris journals" for the new yorker, moved to paris with his wife and young son in 1995. this book combines published journal entries as well as a few gopnik kept out of the paper.

if you're interested in paris and know something about the city, check this book out. i'm fascinated with the city, and while i've only been twice, gopnik's recollections seems somewhat familiar to me. from the cafe scenes to the mix of history and the present, you'll find enough paris to keep you busy.

only a couple of caveats... there are some chapters (like the one focusing on the transportation strike in 1995) that just aren't that interesting... also if you've never been to paris, you might be a bit lost. on the whole, though, this book is well worth a look.
