wow, i'm really glad i got directv. after this week's make-the-world-hate-us move by DISH networks, their subscribers are left w/out mtv, bet, comedy central, vh1, nick, and local cbs... damn, especially as march madness arrives. DISH of course points to viacom's rate increases, and viacom points right back to DISH's own subscriber hike. from viacom's press release comes some awfully strong language:

Fortunately, consumers have a choice. Current EchoStar/DISH Network subscribers who would like to continue receiving BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, VH1, and all our other channels can easily switch to one of these reputable operators. We urge them to do so.

i'd seen the crawl on viacom-owned stations like mtv and comedy central this past week: "if you have DISH this channel could go away!" naturally since i don't have DISH, i didn't really care. argue amongst yourselves while the subscribers wind up losing. then tonight on comedy central, viacom poured it on thick again. sure it's a petty jab, but it's still great. here's the transcript for ya, if only b/c i can...

Thanks to the DISH Network, the best comedy on TV is going bye-bye. South Park, gone. Chappelle's Show, peace out. Reno 911, 86'd. The Juggies, bounced. The Daily Show, more like the Never Show. So if you know anyone w/ the DISH network, make room on your couch. 'Cause they'll be spending a whole 'lotta time watching comedy at your house. Comedy Central, now only on cable and DirecTV.

sorry, DISH. something tells me that viacom has more motivational ability than you do. at least a couple people that i know w/ DISH are thinking about switching. do you really think you can just take away the best channels and still keep your customers?!?! good luck w/ that.

Dish network is horrible I had to beg to get out of my contract. Equipment broke it would take two weeks with no tv before someone repaired it because I hade taken 3 days of vacation to have other dish network repairs done. Then get ready to take the equipment down yourself if you're renting. There customer service managers are worthless anal friction blisters. Go cable or the other sat service.

Has anyone else had problems with these new Dish Network receivers? I have had three site visits to repair an issue with these new receivers. The technicians keep asking if it's my tvs! Are you kidding me?

I called dish network to cancel my service too and had a pretty decent customer service experience until I got the box to return my receivers. They actually want me to get on a ladder, climb on my roof, risk my life just to return the main part of the satellite receiver. I was floored! the instructions tell me to "be careful" when I’m on my roof and then tell me what tools to take with me on my quest to retrieve the item! There was nothing in the disclosure about I called immediately to question WTF was going on. when I was told that I would have to pay for a "tech" to retrieve it or I would have to pay for the device I got a little bent - didn’t they install the dish and all of the parts in the first place? I know all about business and the dollars and cents approach to profit as I am a higher ranking VP for a fortune 500 company and far exceed the credentials needed for an explanation from above on dishwashers and warranties. This is a preposterous joke - deal with this!! I like the quote "kiss me before you fuck me" DISH NETWORK SUCKS BIG FAT HAIRY DONKEY NUTS! just to play fair and let bygones be bygones I did have a friend who eventually had to bring his 40 ft. ladder over just to get to the spot on the roof where the dish was attached. after retrieving the item I placed it in a large plastic bag then placed it into another larger bag filled with 2 weeks of collected "doggy-treats" with an attached note: "since I had to go through so much shit to get this thing I thought you should have to do the same"! Best Wishes! I also placed other bags filled with gravel inside the box to increase shipping weight so they would have to pay more to get it back - I got the last laugh you (Dish Network) Sorry Fucks!!!!
I encourage everyone to be creative but not destructive in getting back at large corporations when they stick it to you with a wire brush and no reach around.

Yep, dish network bites the big one...i turned in my stuff and 2 mos later, still got dinged by Dish at a bank account i'd closed after my move across the country(had .33 cents in it). The bank paid the charge, and by the time I found out the mistake and called, I got DISH to agree to a refund, BUT the charge had racked up huge bucks in bank overdraft charges, of which, of course they were not willing to pay. Some manager in some offshore call center actually hung up on me rather than deal with my request for a fair settling of the bill. Although my year agreement was complete, they still racked me for NOT using their crappy services for 2 months, after they promised they would not. Had to listen to 10 minutes of them braggin about their consumate customer service skills. What an insult! Don't know if the saga is over yet or not, but it's sure hell getting away from Dish. Would only recommend them to mortal enemies. Keep putting out the word!

I just got of the phone with dish "customer service" for the second day in a row.
here's a synopsis of their errors with me:
1. I cancelled the acct in December 2004.
2. They sent the return box first to a wrong address, and then I called and got them to send to my address.
3. Retruned the stuff, received by their office January 12, 2005.
4. No correspondence whatsoever from DISH until April 5, 2005, when I receive a recorded message to call DISH Network about my account.
5. Turns out they think I owe them $203.58, becuase of an equipment fee they charged to my account in March (note--2 months AFTER they received the equipment). Agent reversed the charge.
6. Got a call from an outside collection agency on April 13, saying that on April 9, they received a request to collect the debt of $203.58. (note--3 days AFTER the charge reversal was processed)
7. Spoke with 2 agents who eventually guaranteed to expidite the fee reversal by that day, but flatly refused my request to send any written evidence of their error, in case I needed to contest the collection with the Credit Bureau.
8. Next day fee was reversed as promised, and I called back to find out when I would receive refund for the credit of $9.98 that was owed to me (I had noticed online that this wrong address where they sent the box in the first place was still in their system, along with my actual address.)
Asked that agent if he could at least give me access to print my statements since December (he confirmed that it was their policy not to send bills on cancelled accounts, even when there was a balance due!!!!). He said he could only do it for a FEE OF $2.00 per statement.

I think I'll just wait until I get a lawyer to subpoena their phone logs.

DISH SUCKS!!! THEY ARE GREAT TIL YOU HAVE TO CANCEL!!!. I had to cancel mine due to moving out of state. They said they would ship boxes to return receivers, and didn't ship them. So I had them ship the boxes to my neighbor and had my neighbor ship the receivers.

Their record shows they didn't receive the third receiver!!!! They kept charging me 200 bucks.

HERE IS WHAT SUCKS ABOUT DISH. YOU ARE TOTALLY AT THEIR MERCY TO GET YOU OUT OF CONTRACT!!!. Don't get dish. Spread the word

Interestingly enough, this post still gets a lot of hits... Are people still having issues with DISH? I've been very happy with DirecTV, and actually upgraded to their HD service (with DVR) back in February. Just curious to see what you guys are seeing out there. Thanks for stopping by!

Andrew Stott on 2007.10.26 @ 12:20 AM

I'll let you know how my cancellation goes. DirectTV is due here any minute to switch me from Dish to DirectTV. At least I won't have to go retrieve the dish because I am assuming that the DirectTV folks won't mind swapping one for the other. Thanks for the heads up though from other people who have tried to cancel Dish.
